Gym Leader #6: Winona - Pokemon Emerald

Gym Leader #6: Winona - Flying

Winona has five Pokemon; Swablu, Tropius, Pelipper, Skarmory & Altaria. Her gym looks complex, but once you know what you are doing, it's not too bad. You need to turn the turn-styles round in the correct way so that you can make your way through the small maze.

Swablu

Level: 29

Types: Normal/Flying

Ability: Natural Cure

Attacks: Perish Song, Mirror Move, Safeguard & Aerial Ace

Weakness: Ice, Electric & Rock

Strategy: No point trying to inflict status as Natural Cure will heal it. Perish Song is interesting where it will lock Swablu into using the same move three times, but on the third turn it will knock you out as well as Swablu; fainting both Pokemon. Super Effective moves will take it out easily.

Tropius

Level: 29

Types: Grass/Flying

Ability: Chlorophyll

Attacks: Sunny Day, Aerial Ace, Solar Beam & Synthesis

Weakness: Flying, Ice, Rock, Fire & Poison

Strategy: Tropius can be really annoying once a Sunny Day is active; allowing Solar Beam to fire in the same turn it is used, rather than taking a turn before to charge up, as well as Synthesis healing more health. Fire & Poison Types are the best way to go, especially how Fire-Type Moves will be boosted with Sunny Day up.

Pelipper

Level: 30

Types: Water/Flying

Ability: Keen Eye

Attacks: Water Gun, Supersonic, Protect & Aerial Ace

Weakness: Electric & Rock

Strategy: Pelipper can be really annoying as well. Using a Supersonic/Protect Combo which makes it really difficult to attack. Electric Moves will work best as Rock Types will be weak against Pelipper's Water Gun.

Skarmory

Level: 31

Types: Steel/Flying

Ability: Keen Eye

Attacks: Sand Attack, Fury Attack, Steel Wing & Aerial Ace

Weakness: Electric & Fire

Strategy: Skarmory will used Sand Attack liberally which will decrease your accuracy. Fire and Electric moves are a must, especially how Skarmory has high defences.

Altaria

Level: 33

Types: Dragon/Flying

Ability: Natural Cure

Attacks: Earthquake, Dragon Breath, Dragon Dance & Aerial Ace

Weakness: Ice, Rock & Dragon

Strategy: Once against, don't waste your time by trying to inflict status as Natural Cure will heal it. Once Altaria has a couple of Dragon Dance's up it will become an unstoppable tank. Rock & Ice is the best way to go as Dragon Types will be damaged more against Altaria Dragon Breath.

Once you defeat Winona you will get TM 40 Aerial Ace and the Feather Badge.
